My (not so) Perfect Life

I was sitting on the subway the other day and noticed an ad for a book called “My (not so) perfect life”.

In that moment, I thought: wouldn’t it be funny if I started a Facebook page with all the typical things that go wrong in the day (as a sharp contrast to the “perfect” life images that people typically post on Facebook). No one ever posts the typical odds and ends that happen in a given week. You get a flat tire, your roof leaks, you lose your favourite hat, you know typical stuff.

I started thinking of what I would post for this week.  So here it goes (My “not so” perfect week):

  1. A picture of my glass sliding door (that exits from my open concept kitchen into the backyard) shattered into pieces.  My 3 year old son decided to take a metal bar and wack it a few times for fun and to “make mama laugh”.  The $800 bill that landed on my desk to fix it was what really made “mama laugh”.

2. A picture of me at the hospital getting my head examined by an ER doctor on Wednesday afternoon as a result of an injury I sustained at my eldest son’s 5 Year old gymnastics birthday party.  I was having so much fun at the party that I had the bright idea to take the 4 and 5 year olds on a “circuit” adventure throughout the gym. The toddlers loved the idea and were all giggling and calling me “coach”.  I excitingly began leading the the way: Through the tunnel, bounce the trampoline, onto the beam, run up the mat mountain, slide down the mat mountain tummy first holding hands, jump over the pillows, step onto the half moon 6 feet high mats, and so on.  On round 2 of the circuit, I had slid down the mat mountain, jumped onto the 6 feet high mats and then all of a sudden I woke up with 12 adults starring down at me.  The 6 foot high half moon mat had apparently turned over, and I landed on the left side of my chin. My lower jaw bumped my upper jaw and gave me a concussion. There you have it. A concussion from a toddler gym… =).

3. A picture of my kitchen ceiling with two giant square holes cut out.  My 3 year old again thought it would be funny to spearhead another mishap in the house. This time, he decided to put toilet paper in the bathtub.  What do you know, I have kids looking for “cheap thrills” which end up being expensive thrills.  Naturally my bathtub got plugged and would not drain. Keeping our cool, my husband and I both unsuccessfully tried to bail it out and unplug the mishap.  First thing Monday morning I call our local plumber, Jack.  He says no problem and advises me that it is a simple routine snake job and sends over his associate Devon to do the work.  I let Devon in (who has been to my house before) and go back to my basement office.  Around 1 pm, I go upstairs for lunch and as I am walking up the stairs, I hear what sounds like a waterfall. Hmm, is Devon running the shower, I think? As I turn the corner, I see water flowing everywhere from our kitchen ceiling and flowing with a fairly strong flow down onto the kitchen floor. Apparently the “main pipe” burst.  Big Hole and Big Bill. That’s all I have to say is: Big Hole and Big Bill.  My (not so) perfect moment =).   Here is what my kitchen ceiling looks like now.

So that is a little snapshot of what my (not so) perfect week looked like.  You know what though?  Eventhough it was not so perfect, I realized that it didn’t phase me too much.  There seemed to be some perfect in the imperfect.  Maybe that’s Facebook worthy?

  1. I love you Shiri! That 3 year is definitely a mischievous one… The other day my 6 year old decided that throwing metal cars against the wall is the best thing ever…. leading to chipped paint and little holes all over our walls. I am working on not being phased…
